This discovery, made by researchers from the Human and Environment Alliance League (HEAL) during an investigation into pangolin poaching, marks the first documented sighting of the elusive species in the region. The sighting was captured on camera on January 12, 2025.

The rusty-spotted cat (Prionailurus rubiginosus) is a tiny feline, weighing around 900 grams and measuring about 1.5 feet in length. Its tail adds an additional foot to its size. The species is classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List.
