The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) recently faced a setback with its NVS-02 satellite mission. Launched on January 29, 2025, this mission marked ISRO’s 100th satellite launch. The satellite was intended to be placed in a specific orbital slot, but a valve malfunction prevented the necessary orbit-raising operations from being carried out.
Launch Details
The NVS-02 satellite was launched from the Sriharikota space center.
It is the second satellite in the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NVS) series.
The launch proceeded with high precision, and all vehicle stages performed flawlessly.
The satellite was successfully placed into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).
Current Status of NVS-02
At present, the NVS-02 satellite is in an elliptical orbit. Its systems are functioning properly, and communication with ground stations has been established. Additionally, the satellite's solar panels have been deployed and are generating power as expected.
Technical Issue
The orbit-raising operations could not be completed due to a malfunction in the satellite's valves, which are responsible for allowing the oxidizer needed to fire the thrusters. The failure to open these valves halted the planned orbital maneuvers.
Alternate Mission Plans
ISRO is now exploring alternative strategies to make use of the satellite while it remains in its elliptical orbit. These efforts may include adjusting the satellite’s operational parameters to ensure it can still provide navigation services.
NVS-02 Capabilities
The NVS-02 satellite is equipped with sophisticated navigation payloads that operate in L1, L5, and S bands. It also has a ranging payload in the C-band. Like its predecessor, NVS-01, NVS-02 features a combination of indigenous and procured atomic clocks to provide precise time estimation.
Replacement Of IRNSS-1E
Once fully operational, NVS-02 is set to replace the IRNSS-1E satellite. Positioned at 111.75ºE, it will contribute to enhancing India's satellite navigation capabilities, aligning with ISRO’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the Indian satellite navigation system.
