Recently, Andhra Pradesh's eco-friendly wooden Etikoppaka Toys received recognition at the Republic Day parade.
About Etikoppaka Toys
Also known as Etikoppaka Bommalu, these wooden toys are part of a rich 400-year-old craft tradition. Originating from Etikoppaka village in Andhra Pradesh, the toys are famous for their smooth shapes and vibrant colours, which are achieved using natural dyes made from seeds, lacquer, bark, roots, and leaves.
The primary material used for crafting these toys is wood from the 'ankudu' tree (Wrightia tinctoria), known for its soft texture. The toys are carefully crafted without sharp edges, making them rounded on all sides.
In 2017, Etikoppaka Toys were awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, a prestigious recognition of their authenticity and cultural value.

A Geographical Indication is a label applied to products that are linked to a particular geographic region and have qualities or a reputation attributable to that origin. In India, GI registration is governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act of 1999. Darjeeling tea was the first product in India to receive a GI tag in 2004-05.
