The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has recently inaugurated a new Regional Office in Varanasi.
About IWAI
The Inland Waterways Authority of India, established under the Inland Waterways Authority of India Act, 1985, is a statutory body responsible for the development and maintenance of infrastructure for inland water transport (IWT) on national waterways. The organization primarily operates using funds provided by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
Currently, IWAI operates through five regional offices located in Guwahati (Assam), Patna (Bihar), Kochi (Kerala), Bhubaneswar (Odisha), and Kolkata (West Bengal). With the addition of the Varanasi office, it now has six regional offices across the country. The headquarters of IWAI is situated in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, and it works under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
Role Of Varanasi Regional Office
The newly established Regional Office in Varanasi will oversee development projects on the River Ganga, its tributaries, and other national waterways in Uttar Pradesh. These waterways include important rivers such as Betwa, Chambal, Gomti, Tons, Varuna, and parts of Gandak, Ghaghra, Karamnasa, and Yamuna. Additionally, the Varanasi office will collaborate with the State Inland Water Transport Authority to promote the development of waterways in Uttar Pradesh.
