About Pangsau Pass

Located at an altitude of 3,727 feet (1,136 meters), Pangsau Pass is situated along the India-Myanmar border, atop the Patkai Hills. This pass is one of the most accessible routes into Myanmar from the Assam plains.

Named after the nearby Burmese village of Pangsau, which lies just 2 kilometers beyond the pass to the east, it holds historical importance. Pangsau Pass is associated with the 13th-century invasion of Assam by the Ahoms, a Shan tribe. It gained significant attention during World War II, when American General "Vinegar Joe" Stilwell's forces encountered the pass as an obstacle while attempting to create a land route to China after Burma fell to the Japanese.

The pass also offers a scenic view of Myanmar's Lake of No Return. Due to the rugged and challenging terrain of the Patkai Mountain Range, Pangsau Pass is often referred to as the "Hell Gate" or "Hell Pass."
