Eligibility Criteria For UPSC Civil Services Exam 2025
To be eligible for the Civil Services Examination, candidates must meet certain academic and age-related requirements for both the Prelims and Mains exams.
Educational Qualifications
Candidates should have a degree from a recognized university or an equivalent qualification.
Final-year students or those awaiting results can apply for the Prelims, provided they submit proof of passing the exam before applying for the Mains.
Candidates holding professional or technical qualifications recognized by the government are also eligible.
Medical students who have completed their MBBS final year but have not completed their internship may apply, provided they submit a course completion certificate when applying for the Mains.
Number Of Attempts
The number of attempts allowed varies depending on the candidate's category:
General Category - Up to six attempts, with a maximum age of 32.
OBC - Up to nine attempts, with a maximum age of 35.
SC/ST - No limit on the number of attempts until the age of 37.
PwBD - Nine attempts allowed, with a maximum age of 42.
EWS - Up to six attempts, with a maximum age of 32.
Nationality Requirements
For the IAS, IPS, and IFS, candidates must be Indian citizens.
For other services, candidates must be Indian citizens or citizens of Nepal, Bhutan, or Tibetan refugees who arrived in India before January 1, 1962. Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) from certain countries wishing to settle permanently in India are also eligible.
Selection Process For UPSC Civil Services Exam 2025
The UPSC Civil Services Exam is a three-stage process: Prelims, Mains, and Personality Test.
Preliminary Exam - This stage consists of two objective-type papers totaling 400 marks. It is a screening test, and the marks obtained in Prelims are not considered for the final ranking. The top candidates (approximately 12 to 13 times the number of vacancies) who clear the Prelims will move on to the Mains Exam.
Mains Exam - The Mains consist of a written exam and a Personality Test (Interview). To be eligible for the Mains, candidates must score at least 33% in the General Studies Paper-II and secure the qualifying marks in General Studies Paper-I.
