Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar, introduced a new toolkit for the ninth edition of Swachh Survekshan, the world’s largest urban cleanliness survey. This edition aims to simplify and systematize the survey process while emphasizing citizen engagement and third-party validation to enhance urban sanitation. Additionally, the event unveiled the Super Swachh League, which recognizes cities that excel in cleanliness.
Overview Of Swachh Survekshan
Launched in 2016 by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Swachh Survekshan focuses on improving urban sanitation through active public participation. The survey evaluates cities based on various cleanliness and sanitation criteria.
Introduction Of Super Swachh League
A new addition to this year's survey is the Super Swachh League, created to celebrate cities that consistently perform well. Cities that have ranked in the top three for at least two out of the last three years (2021-2023) are eligible for this league.
Cities In Super Swachh League (12 Cities)
Very Small Cities (<20,000 population): Panchgani, Patan
Small Cities (20,000–50,000 population): Vita, Sasvad
Medium Cities (50,000–3 Lakh population): Ambikapur, Tirupati, NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Council)
Big Cities (3–10 Lakh population): Noida, Chandigarh
Million-Plus Cities (>10 Lakh population): Navi Mumbai, Indore, Surat
Each category has its own tailored evaluation parameters.
Assessment Criteria
To remain in the Super Swachh League, cities must achieve at least 85% in their cleanliness score and will be judged on additional aspirational indicators.
Impact Of Swachh Survekshan
Swachh Survekshan has fostered collaboration between local governments and citizens, encouraging them to take greater responsibility for cleanliness. The initiative aims to make sanitation a top priority across India and motivates cities to continuously improve their standards.
Recognition And Awards
The cleanest cities in each population category will be awarded, giving smaller cities a platform to be recognized alongside larger cities like Indore and Surat. Indore, which has held the title of the cleanest city for seven consecutive years, continues to set a high benchmark in urban cleanliness.
