The Union Cabinet has recently approved the creation of a Third Launch Pad (TLP) at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) located in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
About Third Launch Pad
The Third Launch Pad project aims to develop launch infrastructure at Sriharikota to support ISRO's Next Generation Launch Vehicles (NGLV). It will also serve as a backup to the existing Second Launch Pad at Sriharikota, thus increasing ISRO's launch capacity for future human spaceflight missions from India.
Key Features And Implementation Strategy
The TLP will be designed with a universal configuration, capable of supporting NGLVs, LVM3 vehicles with a Semicryogenic stage, and enhanced versions of the NGLV.
The project will leverage maximum industry involvement and ISRO’s prior experience in constructing launch pads, making use of the existing facilities at the launch complex.
The TLP is scheduled to be completed within 48 months (4 years).
Funding
The total estimated cost for the establishment of the TLP and its related infrastructure is Rupees 3984.86 crore.
Significance
This initiative will strengthen India’s space ecosystem by allowing for more frequent launches and enhancing the nation’s capabilities in human spaceflight and space exploration missions.
Background
Currently, India relies on two launch pads: the First Launch Pad (FLP) and the Second Launch Pad (SLP). The FLP, which was established 30 years ago, continues to support PSLV and SSLV launches. The SLP, built primarily for GSLV and LVM3 rockets, has been operational for almost two decades, increasing India's capacity for both national missions, such as the Chandrayaan-3 mission, and commercial PSLV/LVM3 launches.
