About Siachen Glacier
The Siachen Glacier is a piedmont glacier situated in the Karakoram Range. It is located in the heavily glaciated region of the Himalayas, often referred to as the "Third Pole," due to the vast amount of fresh water stored in its glaciers, second only to the polar ice caps.
The glacier is positioned between the Saltoro Ridge, a subrange of the Karakorams, on the western side, and the main Karakoram Range to the east. It is the world’s second-longest nonpolar glacier, after the Fedchenko Glacier in Tajikistan.
The glacier originates at the base of Indira Col West, a low point on the Indira Ridge. It holds strategic importance, as it dominates the Shaksgam Valley (which Pakistan ceded to China in 1963), controls the routes from Gilgit Baltistan to Leh in the west, and also overlooks the historic Karakoram Pass to the east.
Siachen is the primary source of the Nubra River, a major tributary of the Shyok River, which stretches over 80 km. The glacier is also known as the world’s highest battleground. In 1984, India gained control of the region under Operation Meghdoot.
