Description

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is set to expand, following approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). This expansion will add two new battalions, each consisting of 1,025 personnel, bringing the total number of CISF battalions from 13 to 15. This move will create 2,050 new jobs, reinforcing the force's capacity to enhance national security, particularly in managing internal security and high-security prisons.

CISF Expansion Details

The MHA’s greenlighting of the two new battalions comes in response to the growing responsibilities of the CISF. Each battalion will be commanded by a senior officer, and the expansion is part of a larger initiative to strengthen national security. As part of this broader plan, the creation of the Mahila Battalion was also previously approved. This will bring the CISF’s personnel strength to nearly 200,000, increasing its overall capabilities.

Significance Of Expansion

The two new battalions will enhance the CISF’s ability to respond swiftly to emergencies. Equipped with transport vehicles and weapons, these reserve units will be able to deploy quickly, improving the force’s ability to manage critical situations and boost public safety and security.

Improving Personnel Welfare

The expansion is also expected to reduce the burden on existing personnel. CISF Inspector General Ajay Dahiya emphasized that the increased strength will improve the overall welfare of the workforce by offering more opportunities for leave and weekly relief, ensuring better work-life balance for the personnel.

About CISF

Formed under the CISF Act of 1968, the CISF initially focused on providing security for public sector enterprises. Over time, it has evolved into a comprehensive security organization that protects vital infrastructure across India. The CISF now provides security for government buildings, airports, seaports, nuclear plants, and even iconic monuments like the Taj Mahal.

CISF’s Organizational Structure

The CISF is headed by a Director-General, an officer from the Indian Police Service, and is divided into seven sectors Airport, North, North-East, East, West, South, and Training. Additionally, the force operates a Fire Service Wing, expanding its multi-faceted role.

Roles And Responsibilities

The CISF's scope of work includes safeguarding key installations, such as nuclear and space facilities, power plants, and airports, a responsibility it assumed in 2000 after the hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC-814. The force also ensures the security of government buildings, the Delhi Metro, and Parliament House. In addition, it provides VIP security for prominent individuals.

Future Prospects For CISF

This expansion is expected to further strengthen the CISF’s operational capacity, enabling it to meet the growing demands of national security. The additional battalions will ensure the force can continue to address emerging security challenges while maintaining a strong focus on personnel welfare and public safety.
