Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has successfully launched the second multi-purpose vessel (MPV) for the Indian Navy, named INS Utkarsh, at the Kattupalli Shipyard near Chennai. This milestone highlights India’s progress in indigenous shipbuilding under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Remarkably, the launch took place just three months after the debut of the first MPV, INS Samarth, showcasing L&T’s rapid production capabilities.
INS Utkarsh: Overview
INS Utkarsh has a length of 107 meters, a width of 18.6 meters, and a displacement of over 3,750 tonnes. The vessel is designed to reach a maximum speed of 15 knots. It will enhance the Indian Navy's capabilities in maritime surveillance, patrolling, and disaster relief operations.
Features And Functions
The MPVs are versatile, serving multiple roles such as towing ships, launching and recovering targets, and supporting unmanned autonomous vehicle operations. They also function as platforms for testing indigenous weapons and sensors and contribute to humanitarian assistance and combating marine pollution.
Design And Construction
The design engineering of the MPVs was carried out at L&T’s Warship Design Centre in Chennai, while construction took place at the Kattupalli Shipyard, one of the most advanced shipbuilding facilities in India. The shipyard is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, including ship-lift, dry, and wet berths, enabling efficient concurrent shipbuilding and repairs.
Other L&T Defence Projects
Besides the two MPVs, L&T is involved in the construction of three Cadet Training Ships and six additional naval vessels for the Indian Navy. These initiatives are part of a public-private partnership model. The company is also carrying out the repair of the Indian naval ship INS Tir at the Kattupalli Shipyard.
Future Of Indigenous Shipbuilding
The launch of INS Utkarsh and L&T’s ongoing projects represent a significant leap in enhancing India’s naval capabilities. This underscores the government's commitment to self-reliance in defense and the growing importance of local manufacturing in strengthening national security.
