The Government of India has recently designated the areas surrounding the Shikari Devi Wildlife Sanctuary in Mandi district as eco-sensitive zones (ESZs). This move aims to mitigate the effects of urbanization and development on the adjacent protected areas.

About Shikari Devi Wildlife Sanctuary

Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, the sanctuary is located in Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh. Spanning altitudes from 1,800 to 3,400 meters, it showcases the transition from pine forests to oak woodlands, and finally to alpine meadows. The sanctuary is named after Shikari Devi, a revered goddess, with a temple dedicated to her perched amidst snow-capped peaks and dense pine forests at an elevation of 2,850 meters.

The sanctuary covers 7,200 hectares, which were designated as a protected area in 1962.

Flora

Due to the diverse altitudes within the sanctuary, it supports seven distinct forest types as per the Champion and Seth (1968) classification, including Alpine Pasture, Sub-alpine Forest, Moist Temperate Deciduous Forest, West Himalayan Upper Oak/Fir Forest, Kharsu Oak Forest, Western Mixed Coniferous Forest, and Ban Oak Forest.

Fauna

Shikari Devi Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a variety of wildlife species, such as goral, monal, black bear, barking deer, musk deer, and cat leopard. Additionally, it houses the Himalayan black bear, Himalayan palm civet, martens, Indian porcupines, Kashmiri flying squirrels, common langurs, leopards, and even the elusive snow leopard.
