Around 100 tribal individuals from the Pulicat region will receive specialized training in pearl spot farming, crab fattening, and clownfish aquaculture. This initiative is being organized by the National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR).
About National Bureau Of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR)
The NBFGR was founded in December 1983 in Allahabad under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to conduct research aimed at preserving the fish genetic resources of India. Its permanent base in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, was established in 1999. The primary goal of the Bureau is to assess and conserve fish genetic resources, ensuring sustainable use and protecting intellectual property related to these resources for future generations.
The Bureau focuses on identifying, documenting, and conserving the genetic diversity of fish species, which is essential for maintaining sustainable and healthy fish populations. It has developed advanced infrastructure, technologies, and strategies for tasks such as database creation, genotyping, aquatic germplasm registration, gene banking, and assessing endangered or exotic fish species.
Understanding Aquaculture
Aquaculture refers to the cultivation and breeding of aquatic organisms, including fish, shellfish, and aquatic plants, for various purposes, such as commercial, recreational, and scientific. This practice dates back to at least 500 BC, but its commercial significance has only grown since the mid-20th century.
There are two primary types of aquaculture - marine and freshwater. Aquaculture can take place in various environments, including coastal ocean waters, rivers, freshwater ponds, and even land-based tanks. It is one of the fastest-growing sectors of global food production. Currently, aquaculture accounts for more than half of all seafood consumed by humans worldwide.
Leading Producers Of Aquaculture
China is the largest producer in the global aquaculture market, contributing nearly 60% of all farmed seafood. Other significant contributors to aquaculture production include Indonesia, India, and Vietnam.
