The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has unveiled a draft for the 2025 National Essential Diagnostics List (NEDL), aimed at enhancing diagnostic services across various healthcare levels in India. Public feedback is being sought until January 15, 2025, before the final version of the list is adopted. The NEDL initiative, first introduced in 2019, emphasizes the role of diagnostics in strengthening India’s healthcare system.
Overview Of NEDL 2025
The NEDL 2025 outlines the essential diagnostic tests required at different healthcare facilities, including village health centres, Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, primary health centres (PHCs), community health centres (CHCs), sub-district hospitals (SDHs), and district hospitals (DHs). The updated list includes vital tests for diseases such as diabetes, malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, and syphilis.
Key Revisions In Diagnostic Tests
The draft proposes an expansion in the number of diagnostic tests available at various levels of healthcare facilities. Ayushman Arogya Mandirs will now provide 16 tests, an increase from 12, while PHCs will offer 74 tests, up from 64. CHCs will expand from 70 to 93 tests, and district hospitals will increase from 117 to 171 tests. At the village level, Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) will now be involved in conducting tuberculosis tests.
Hub-And-Spoke Model For Diagnostics
NEDL 2025 adopts a hub-and-spoke model for the delivery of diagnostic services. Sample collection will take place at all healthcare facilities, while testing will be centralized at more equipped centers. This approach ensures efficient resource utilization and increases accessibility to essential diagnostic services across the country.

The draft list has been developed with input from a variety of stakeholders through consultation meetings. The ICMR encourages the public to provide feedback via email at icmr.nedl2@gmail.com before the January 15, 2025 deadline.
