The Boda Tyohar festival, celebrated by the Hatti tribes in the Trans-Giri region of Himachal Pradesh, has begun with vibrant zeal. This annual festival is the largest for the Hatti community, which has an estimated population of around three lakh people. Locally known as Magho ko Tyohar, it spans the entire month of Magha and features three distinct sub-festivals, each with its own unique customs and traditions.
About Boda Tyohar
Boda Tyohar commenced on the evening of Posh Dwadashi, which fell on a Friday this year. The festival holds great cultural importance for the Hatti people, serving as a time to celebrate their deep-rooted traditions and strong community ties. It emphasizes the values of family and togetherness, which are central to the community’s identity.
Bodhto – Start Of Celebrations
The festival’s first day is known as Bodhto. On this day, families prepare traditional dishes such as Pude, Bedoli, Patanday, Dhroti, and Gudoli, which are offered to the deities in gratitude and respect. The entire community gathers to participate in these rituals, reinforcing their shared heritage and cultural values.
Bhatioj – A Day For Community Gathering
The next day is called Bhatioj. The festivities take place at the Sanjha Angan, a communal courtyard usually owned by the village head, or Siyana. Villagers gather at temples dedicated to Kul Devtas, including Shirgul Maharaj and Mahasu Maharaj, to seek blessings. After enjoying a communal meal, the evening is filled with songs and dances, which continue until dawn. This day also highlights the significant role women play in Hatti culture, as they actively participate in the celebrations.
Saje ka Duna – A Tradition Of Gift Exchange
The morning after Bhatioj is marked by the Saje ka Duna tradition, where men visit their married sisters, bringing gifts of meat, jaggery, and wheat flour. This exchange fosters strong family bonds. The sisters, in turn, visit their parental homes to collect their share of the gifts, reinforcing familial connections during the festival.
Geet – A Celebration of Music
The Geet celebrations follow, where married women join in the musical festivities. Local composers present new songs, celebrating themes of love, family, and nature. These songs contribute to the cultural richness of the festival, showcasing the creative spirit of the Hatti people.
Khoda Festival – Grand Feast
The festival reaches its peak on the eighth day with the Khoda celebration, a grand feast where friends and family are invited to dine together. This event emphasizes the importance of communal meals, symbolizing unity and togetherness within the community.
Boidoot – A Continuation Of Traditions
After the Khoda festival, the Boidoot celebrations begin and continue until the end of the Magha month. During this period, each household invites close relatives and family members for communal dinners at least once throughout the month. This practice reinforces the value of hospitality and family connections, which are key aspects of the Hatti culture.
