Description

India has taken a significant step towards self-reliance in genomics with the achievement of developing its own genomic data. During the Genome India Data Conclave in New Delhi, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted that India now possesses its own genomic data, reducing its dependency on foreign sources. This initiative is aimed at fostering progress in personalized healthcare and medical research.

Launch Of Key Initiatives

At the event, Dr. Singh introduced the Indian Genomic Data Set, alongside the 'Framework for Exchange of Data Protocols (FeED)' and the Indian Biological Data Centre (IBDC) Portals. These new platforms provide researchers globally access to 10,000 whole genome samples, which will enhance the research capabilities in genomics and related fields.

Importance Of GenomeIndia Project

The GenomeIndia project, led by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), is designed to create a comprehensive database that reflects India’s diverse genetic landscape. This initiative will aid research in various domains, such as the development of mRNA-based vaccines and therapies for genetic disorders. Dr. Singh emphasized the importance of this project in enhancing the precision of genetic studies.

Genetic Diversity In India

India’s rich genetic diversity reflects its vast cultural and geographical diversity. The 10,000 genome samples represent a wide array of genetic variations across different Indian populations, making the data crucial for developing genomic tools that are specific to the Indian demographic. This will lead to more targeted healthcare solutions.

Ethical Data Sharing Framework

The FeED Protocols, supported by the Biotech-PRIDE Guidelines, ensure that genomic data is shared ethically and transparently. The Biotech-PRIDE Guidelines, introduced in 2021, highlight India’s commitment to maintaining high standards in the sharing of nation-specific genomic data.

Growth Of India’s Bioeconomy

India’s bioeconomy has grown rapidly, from $10 billion in 2014 to over $130 billion in 2024, with projections indicating it could reach $300 billion by 2030. This growth is attributed to strong leadership and the implementation of the Bioeconomy Policy, which positions India as a global leader in biotechnology.

Future Goals In Genomics

Dr. Singh announced an ambitious goal of sequencing 10 million genomes in the future. This target is designed to accelerate advancements in genomics and personalized medicine. Collaborations with prestigious institutions, such as Tata Memorial Hospital, are being planned to enhance data enrichment efforts.

Transformative Impact Of Genomic Data

Experts highlighted the transformative potential of genomic data for healthcare, particularly in the fight against genetic and hereditary diseases. Dr. Rajesh S. Gokhale noted its significance in improving treatment methods, while Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood discussed its applications in agricultural, environmental, and industrial research.

Collaborative Efforts In Genomics

The event also featured contributions from various scientific leaders, such as Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Dr. Y Narahari, and Dr. Arvind Sahu, showcasing the collaborative nature of the GenomeIndia project. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the scientific community and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing genomics in India.
