The Gujarat government announced on Thursday that it will implement new guidelines to limit the use of mobile phones and social media among children, emphasizing that excessive screen time is detrimental to their well-being. The goal is to encourage children to spend more time outdoors and focus on their studies, as explained by State Minister of Education Prafful Panseriya during a press briefing. These guidelines will be developed in consultation with experts.
The minister further mentioned that a previous government resolution, which prohibited mobile phone use for children in primary schools, will be strictly enforced moving forward. Awareness campaigns will be conducted to inform teachers, students, and parents about the new guidelines.
In a similar vein, Australia recently banned social media access for children under 16, and the central government is also considering implementing parental control measures for mobile phone usage, rather than a complete ban on phones for those under 18.
