The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) is one of India’s Central Armed Police Forces, tasked with securing the nation’s borders, particularly along the India-China frontier. Recently, the ITBP Director General announced the relocation of at least 33 Border Outposts (BOPs) closer to the India-China border as part of its forwardisation plan to enhance operational readiness.
History And Background Of ITBP
The ITBP was established in 1962, in response to the Sino-Indian War of 1962, with the primary objective of securing India’s border with the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Initially raised under the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Act, the ITBP was later recognized as a separate force with the passage of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force Act, 1992, followed by the framing of the corresponding rules in 1994.
In 2004, ITBP was officially designated as a full-fledged Central Armed Police Force under the Ministry of Home Affairs, solidifying its role in the country’s border defense.
Mission And Role
ITBP is tasked with guarding the 3,488 km long India-China border, which extends from Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh. The force operates across a range of challenging terrains, with Border Outposts (BOPs) positioned at altitudes ranging from 9,000 feet to 18,750 feet.
ITBP personnel are highly specialized, with many officers and soldiers trained in mountaineering and skiing to adapt to the difficult mountainous regions. The force’s personnel are known for their resilience and determination in securing some of the most difficult-to-reach areas of the Indian border.
Motto And Structure
The ITBP operates under the motto "Shaurya-Dridhata-Karma-Nishtha," which translates to Valour, Determination, and Devotion to Duty, reflecting the core values of the force. Its headquarters is located in New Delhi.
