Description

The Anji Khad Rail Bridge, located in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, stands as India's pioneering cable-stayed rail bridge. It is a significant part of the Udampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which aims to strengthen the region's connectivity, essential for both economic growth and tourism.

Bridge Overview

  • Total Length: 725.5 meters

  • Main Pylon Height: 193 meters above the foundation, making it an impressive architectural feature.

  • Location: Connects the towns of Katra and Reasi, streamlining travel between these areas.

Engineering Challenges And Solutions

The construction of the Anji Khad Bridge faced several engineering hurdles, primarily due to the complex geology of the region. The area is characterized by geological faults, folds, and seismic activity, making it a challenging site for construction. To overcome these difficulties, extensive research was carried out by experts from the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) at Roorkee and Delhi. A hybrid foundation was designed at the Katra end to stabilize the slopes, ensuring that the bridge remains structurally sound over time.

Structural Design And Features

The Anji Khad Rail Bridge is made up of four main sections:

  • Ancillary Viaduct (Reasi side): 120 meters.

  • Approach Bridge (Katra end): 38 meters.

  • Cable-Stayed Main Section: 473.25 meters.

  • Central Embankment: 94.25 meters.

The total deck width is 15 meters, which accommodates:

  • A single railway line

  • A service road

  • Footpaths for pedestrians.

Advanced Construction Techniques

The construction of the bridge incorporated cutting-edge technologies and methodologies to enhance safety and reduce construction time. For example, DOKA Jump Form Shuttering and Pump Concreting Systems were utilized, helping to cut the construction duration by approximately 30%. Additionally, a state-of-the-art tower crane was imported from Spain, enabling construction at heights of up to 193 meters, a significant challenge in such a difficult-to-reach location.

Safety And Monitoring Systems

The bridge’s design includes a sophisticated integrated monitoring system that employs multiple sensors throughout its structure. These sensors continuously assess the health of the bridge, ensuring safety throughout its lifespan. The bridge is also engineered to withstand extreme weather conditions, with a tolerance for wind speeds up to 213 km/h.

Impact On Regional Connectivity

The Anji Khad Rail Bridge is poised to be a key contributor to the region's transportation network. Once completed, it will significantly enhance access to the Kashmir Valley, which will not only make travel more efficient but also boost tourism and overall economic development in the region. The bridge is a major milestone in India's infrastructure expansion and promises long-term benefits for the local population and the nation as a whole.

About Udampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) Project

The USBRL project is a major initiative aimed at connecting the Kashmir Valley with the broader Indian Railways network, which will help integrate the region with the rest of the country and foster development. Key facts about the project include:

  • Declared a National Project: In 2002.

  • Total Length: 272 kilometers.

  • Notable Features: The longest transportation tunnel in India (T-49), spanning 12.75 kilometers, The Chenab Bridge, recognized as the world's highest railway bridge, measuring 1,315 meters in length.

Through the USBRL project, India is working to improve the infrastructure of one of its most challenging regions, creating better access to the Kashmir Valley and stimulating economic opportunities for its people.
