Description

Indonesia has officially joined the BRICS group, marking a significant milestone in its diplomatic and economic journey. This announcement was made by Brazil’s government, and Indonesia's foreign ministry emphasized that this membership is pivotal for strengthening ties with other emerging economies and the Global South.

Overview Of BRICS

BRICS stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, a bloc that was informally established in 2006 and formalized in 2009. The inaugural BRICS summit took place in Yekaterinburg, Russia, and South Africa joined the group in 2010, which expanded the organization’s influence. Over time, the group’s membership has grown to include nations such as Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the UAE, highlighting its rising importance in global affairs. BRICS now seeks to position itself as an alternative to the G7, which is largely dominated by Western nations. More than 30 countries, including Southeast Asian nations like Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam, have either expressed interest in joining or have applied for membership.

Indonesia’s Path To BRICS Membership

Indonesia’s desire to join BRICS dates back several years, and the process reached fruition at the 2023 BRICS summit. Under Brazil's leadership, the approval of Indonesia's membership was secured. Indonesia chose to finalize the process after its 2024 presidential election, which saw Prabowo Subianto assume the presidency in October.

Indonesia's Goals Within BRICS

For Indonesia, becoming a part of BRICS signifies a crucial step in strengthening relationships with other developing nations. The country's foreign ministry emphasized the importance of this membership in promoting equality, mutual respect, and sustainable development. BRICS members are united in their commitment to reforming global governance structures, with an emphasis on enhancing cooperation among the Global South.

Economic Impact Of BRICS Membership

Collectively, BRICS represents roughly 3.5 billion people, or 45% of the world’s population. The combined economies of the group exceed USD 28.5 trillion, making up about 28% of the global economy. The addition of new members, such as Indonesia, Iran, and the UAE, significantly boosts the bloc's economic influence, positioning it as a major force in global trade and investment.

Geopolitical Ramifications Of BRICS Expansion

BRICS’ growth enhances its geopolitical leverage, particularly in the energy sector. The group's access to vast energy reserves, especially from countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran, is central to its energy cooperation. For Russia, BRICS also serves as a platform to diversify its energy markets, reducing reliance on traditional Western markets.
Furthermore, the inclusion of Egypt and Ethiopia strengthens BRICS’ strategic position along crucial maritime trade routes like the Suez Canal and the Red Sea. Amid the ongoing geopolitical turbulence caused by conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, the Global South is increasingly aligning with Beijing and Moscow, diminishing its dependence on the Western-dominated global order.

China’s Influence In BRICS

China’s rise as an economic and political powerhouse plays a central role in BRICS’ evolution. China’s vision for a "multipolar" world order challenges the dominance of the US in global financial and security systems. By becoming a key member of BRICS, China seeks to amplify its influence, while Russia has also used the BRICS platform to strengthen its global ties despite Western sanctions.

Future Of BRICS And Indonesia's Role

Indonesia’s inclusion is expected to accelerate BRICS’ efforts toward promoting fairer global governance. As Brazil leads the group’s agenda during its presidency, BRICS will continue its push to foster greater trade and cooperation among its members. Indonesia, with its strategic position in Southeast Asia and growing influence in the region, is well-poised to contribute actively to BRICS’ future initiatives, helping to shape discussions on issues like economic development, security, and climate change. As BRICS continues to expand, it represents a new, multipolar vision for global governance, with Indonesia playing a crucial role in supporting inclusive development.
