Description

UJALA (Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All) scheme launched on January 5, 2015, has significantly reshaped India's energy consumption habits. Initially known as the Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme, its primary goal was to provide affordable LED lighting options to households across the country. By January 2025, more than 36 crore LED bulbs have been distributed, marking a significant achievement in promoting energy conservation and reducing costs for Indian families.

UJALA Scheme Overview

The UJALA initiative was introduced to address the high electricity consumption associated with conventional lighting sources like incandescent and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). These traditional bulbs consumed excessive amounts of energy, contributing to high electricity bills for households. LED bulbs, known for their energy efficiency, were identified as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative.

Economic Impact Of UJALA

One of the key successes of the UJALA scheme has been making LED bulbs more affordable for the general public. LED bulbs are now available at a highly competitive price of Rupees 70 each, while LED tube lights are priced at Rupees 220, and energy-efficient fans can be purchased for Rupees 1,110. This pricing structure follows a transparent and competitive bidding process, ensuring accessibility while covering costs related to distribution and maintenance. Furthermore, the operational cost of an LED bulb is only Rupees 12 annually, far less than the Rupees 40 required for a CFL and Rupees 108 for an incandescent bulb. This translates to significant savings on electricity bills for households.

Environmental Benefits

The UJALA scheme has also played a pivotal role in reducing India’s carbon footprint. By promoting the widespread use of energy-efficient LED bulbs, the programme has helped decrease overall electricity consumption, leading to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. This initiative aligns with India’s climate change mitigation strategies, contributing to the country's goals of environmental sustainability.

Achievements Of UJALA

Since its launch, the UJALA scheme has reached extraordinary milestones. As of January 2025, over 36.87 crore LED bulbs have been distributed, making it the world’s largest zero-subsidy domestic lighting programme. This remarkable achievement has transformed the lighting market in India, delivering substantial savings for households and improving the quality of life for millions of citizens by providing more efficient and reliable lighting.

Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP)

Parallel to UJALA, the Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP) was launched to replace conventional streetlights with energy-efficient LEDs across urban and rural areas. Managed by the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), this initiative aims to reduce municipal energy costs and improve urban infrastructure. As of January 2025, over 1.34 crore LED streetlights have been installed, contributing to energy savings and lowering operational costs for local authorities.

Looking Ahead: Future Of Energy Efficiency In India

The success of both UJALA and SLNP highlights the potential for further advancements in energy efficiency in India. Continued government support and public awareness efforts will be essential to maintaining and expanding these programmes. The future holds great promise with the potential integration of smart technologies and innovative business models that could enhance the impact of energy-saving initiatives in India’s energy landscape.
