The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has achieved a significant milestone in 2024, reporting a 100% conviction rate. This accomplishment highlights the agency’s commitment to enhancing national security and ensuring justice. In total, 68 individuals were convicted across 25 cases, demonstrating the agency’s efficiency in addressing serious criminal activities.
Conviction Highlights
In 2024, the NIA handled 80 cases, leading to the arrest of 210 individuals. The agency secured convictions in various categories, including 28 cases related to Left Wing Extremism (LWE), 18 concerning insurgencies in the North East, seven related to Jammu and Kashmir Jihad, six cases involving explosives, and five human trafficking cases.
Focus On Terrorism And Criminal Networks
The NIA prioritized dismantling terrorist, insurgent, and gangster networks. Notable counter-terrorism operations resulted in the arrest of 14 individuals linked to Khalistani terrorism, 13 associated with gangster activities, and 11 connected to ISIS. A significant operation focused on the ULFA(I) terrorist group in Assam, leading to the arrest of five individuals after a terror-related incident.
Weapons Seizures
The agency also made significant progress in arms seizures across various states. In Jammu, NIA arrested individuals linked to Hizbul Mujahideen and recovered firearms, ammunition, and explosives intended for insurgent groups in the North East, underlining the agency’s proactive stance in preventing armed violence.
International Extraditions
The NIA has expanded its international operations with successful extraditions of key suspects. Notably, Tarsem Singh Sandhu from the UAE and Salman Khan from Rwanda were brought back to India, emphasizing the agency’s growing capacity to combat transnational terrorism and organized crime.
Expanding Operations And Training Initiatives
To strengthen its operational capabilities, the NIA set up two new exclusive courts in Jammu and Ranchi to expedite the judicial process for cases under its jurisdiction. Additionally, over 1,600 officers received specialized training, fostering collaboration with state police forces and enhancing overall national security.
Key Details About National Investigation Agency (NIA)
The NIA was formed under the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Act of 2008 to investigate and prosecute offenses that affect India’s sovereignty, security, and integrity, including those related to:
Atomic and nuclear facilities
Counterfeit currency smuggling
Scheduled Offenses
The NIA investigates offenses listed in the NIA Act, such as violations under the Atomic Energy Act, 1962, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967.
NIA’s Role And Need
Terrorist activities often span multiple states and nations, often linked to organized crime such as arms smuggling and counterfeit currency. The NIA was established after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks to address these issues comprehensively. It operates independently, investigates cases assigned by the Central Government, and presents them before NIA Special Courts, prosecuting cases under UAPA and other related offenses.
The NIA has the unique mandate to operate across state boundaries without the need for state government permission in cases related to terrorism. This autonomy is crucial for its mission to combat terrorism at the central level and maintain national security.
