Description
The Lokpal of India has designated January 16 as “Lokpal Day”, a decision made during a meeting on March 14, 2024. The first celebration of this day will take place on January 16, 2025. The Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, will be the chief guest at the inaugural event, which is scheduled to be held at Zorawar Auditorium, Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi.

History And Evolution Of Lokpal
In the 1960s, the Administrative Reforms Commission (ARC) recommended the formation of the Lokpal and Lokayukta institutions.
The term "Lokpal" was coined by Dr. L. M. Singhvi in 1963, and the idea of an ombudsman for India was first proposed by Ashok Kumar Sen.
The Lokpal Bill was introduced in 1968, but it lapsed. After multiple attempts and with the support of the Anna Hazare movement, it became a law in 2013 under the Lokpal and Lokayukta Act, 2013.

Selection Committee - The committee for selecting the Lokpal includes the Prime Minister, Speaker of Lok Sabha, Leader of Opposition, Chief Justice of India, and a prominent jurist.
Jurisdiction - The Lokpal has the authority to investigate the Prime Minister, Ministers, Members of Parliament (MPs), and government employees.
Composition - The Lokpal body consists of a Chairperson and up to eight members (with at least half being judicial members), focusing on ensuring diversity, including representation from SCs, STs, OBCs, minorities, and women.
Powers - The Lokpal holds supervisory powers over investigative agencies, such as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and can direct investigations into corruption cases.
Foreign Donations - The Lokpal has jurisdiction over foreign contributions exceeding Rupees 10 lakh under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act.
Amendment In 2016
The amendment allowed the Leader of the Opposition to be included in the selection committee if the Leader of Opposition position is vacant.
It also made adjustments to the rules regarding the disclosure of assets and liabilities by public officials.

The Lokpal of India comprises a Chairperson and six members. Justice A. M. Khanwilkar is the current Chairperson, having assumed office on March 10, 2024. The institution was established under the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013, with a mandate to fight corruption in public services and hold officials accountable.
