The Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun, is preparing to launch India's first Fishing Cat Collaring Project at the Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary, where the endangered species is known to be thriving.
About Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary
Location - Situated in the Godavari estuary, Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary lies in the Kakinada district of Andhra Pradesh. It is positioned where the Coringa River meets the Bay of Bengal. "Hope Island" acts as a natural barrier, preventing the direct confluence of the river and the sea.
Geography - The sanctuary spans both sea-backwaters and areas interspersed with creeks, which are influenced by tidal waters. Around 40% of the sanctuary consists of sea-backwaters, while the remaining area is characterized by creeks that get inundated with tidal waters.
Vegetation - The sanctuary boasts extensive mangrove forests and dry deciduous tropical forests. It is home to the second-largest mangrove forest area in India.
Flora - The sanctuary's mangrove vegetation includes species such as Rhizophora spp., Avicennia spp., and Sonneratia spp..
Fauna - The sanctuary is home to a variety of endangered species, including the Smooth Indian Otter, Fishing Cat, and Jackal. Its mangrove habitats provide excellent nesting grounds for bird species like the Black-capped Kingfisher, Brahminy Kite, Sea Gulls, Reef Heron, and Sandpipers. The coastal region is also a key breeding area for Olive Ridley Turtles.
