China has recently approved the construction of what is set to be the world's largest dam, located on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet, near the Indian border. The dam will be built on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River, the Tibetan name for the Brahmaputra. With an estimated total investment surpassing one trillion yuan, the project is anticipated to surpass the Three Gorges Dam as the largest infrastructure undertaking globally.

Location And Engineering Challenges

The dam will be located in a deep Himalayan gorge, presenting significant engineering challenges due to its placement on a tectonic plate boundary. This region is highly earthquake-prone, and the Brahmaputra flows through the world’s deepest canyon, with a vertical drop exceeding 25,000 feet. Additionally, heavy rainfall in the area results in a substantial water flow. Despite these challenges, authorities have pledged to implement advanced safety measures and environmental safeguards. Hydropower Potential

The hydropower plant is projected to generate more than 300 billion kWh of electricity annually, which could provide power to approximately 300 million people for an entire year. The lower stretch of the Brahmaputra is believed to contain nearly 70 million kilowatts of potential power, making it more powerful than the Three Gorges Dam.
