Description

Aisake Valu Eke has been named the new Prime Minister of Tonga, taking over from Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, who resigned on December 9, 2024. Eke is set to officially assume office in February 2024. With a longstanding political career, he brings significant experience to the role, having first entered the Tongan Parliament in 2010.

Political Career

Eke was elected to the Tongan Parliament in 2010, securing a seat as an independent candidate for Tongatapu 5. His victory was particularly notable, as it was the only seat on the main island of Tonga not claimed by the Democratic Party, with Eke receiving 24.1% of the vote. His tenure in Parliament saw him serve as the Minister of Finance from 2014 to 2017, where he developed a reputation for his expertise in economic matters.

Education And Early Career

Eke earned his PhD from the University of Southern Queensland in 2013, where his research focused on evaluating the quality of public sector services in Tonga. Prior to entering politics, he worked as Secretary at the Ministry of Finance, gaining valuable governance experience.

In 2011, Eke made headlines when he protested a parliamentary decision to allocate large allowances to MPs on sick leave abroad, arguing that the government should prioritize fiscal responsibility during challenging economic times. This stance further highlighted his commitment to prudent financial management.

Ministerial Tenure

In January 2014, following a budget dispute that led to the dismissal of his predecessor, Eke was appointed as Minister of Finance. He retained the position under Prime Minister ’Akilisi Pohiva. However, Eke faced difficulties during his tenure, notably abstaining from a vote of no confidence against his own government in March 2017, which eventually led to his resignation from the position.

Upcoming Tenure As Prime Minister

Eke’s tenure as Prime Minister will be relatively short, lasting under a year. Tonga’s next general election is scheduled for November 2025. The country’s Parliament consists of 17 members elected by the public, alongside 9 elected hereditary chiefs, two of whom do not have voting rights in the current legislative proceedings.

Eke’s appointment marks a new chapter in Tonga’s political landscape, with his experience and background in economic governance positioning him to address the challenges ahead.
