Masali village, located in Suigam taluka of Banaskantha district, has made history as India's first solar-powered border village. Situated around 40 kilometers from the Pakistan border, the village, which has a population of approximately 800 residents, is part of a larger Border Development Project that aims to transform 17 border villages into solar-powered communities.

Project Details

The solar initiative in Masali village has been valued at Rupees 1.16 crore, with key contributions from the Revenue Department, Uttar Gujarat Vij Company Limited (UGVCL), local banks, and solar energy companies.

Funding Sources

The project was largely supported by a subsidy of Rupees 59.81 lakh under the PM Suryaghar Yojana. Public donations amounted to Rupees 20.52 lakh, while corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds contributed Rupees 35.67 lakh to the cause.

Energy Capacity And Benefits

Masali village now boasts a solar power capacity of 225.5 kilowatts, distributed across 119 homes, which comfortably meets the energy needs of the entire community. The introduction of solar energy has resolved long-standing electricity challenges in the village. Residents have expressed great satisfaction with the switch to solar power, with Sarpanch Magniram Rawal noting that villagers are now free from the burden of electricity bills, significantly improving their quality of life.

The successful completion of this project marks a significant milestone for the local administration. Banaskantha District Collector Mihir Patel highlighted that Masali is not only the first solar-powered village in a border region but also the second solar village in Gujarat, following Modhera.
