Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced on Tuesday that, starting next year, the National Testing Agency (NTA) will focus exclusively on conducting competitive entrance exams for educational institutions and will no longer be responsible for recruitment exams. The minister also mentioned that discussions are underway between the education and health ministries regarding the format for the NEET-UG exam, with consideration being given to whether it should be held in pen-and-paper mode or online.
“We are currently in talks with the health ministry to decide whether NEET should be conducted in pen-and-paper mode or online. NTA, as a service provider, is ready to implement whichever option is deemed most suitable, with the goal of ensuring a flawless exam process,” Pradhan stated. He also noted that the detailed guidelines for NEET-UG would likely be announced in the next 2-3 weeks.
The minister further clarified that the Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG) would continue to be held once a year. Sharing insights from a committee led by former ISRO Chairman K. Radhakrishnan, Pradhan mentioned that the committee had made recommendations for improving the smooth and fair conduct of exams, as well as strengthening the NTA. These included ensuring the secure storage of question papers and utilizing government educational institutions and infrastructure to ensure the integrity of exam processes.
“NTA will focus solely on conducting entrance exams for higher education, and will not handle recruitment exams from next year. Our priority is to ensure error-free exams and establish accountability,” he added.
The minister also shared that, as per the Radhakrishnan-led panel’s recommendations, NTA would undergo restructuring next year, with new positions being created to enhance its capacity. The panel’s report highlighted that the NTA had taken on an excessive range of tasks by handling a wide array of exam-related services. The committee advised that the NTA should primarily focus on entrance exams, and expanding its responsibilities to include other types of exams should only be considered once its capacity has been strengthened.
The panel’s formation was prompted by the NEET-UG exam paper leak in June. In response, Pradhan outlined that the NTA would establish a robust Grievance Reporting and Redressal Cell to address student concerns. He also mentioned that measures would be taken to address the Supreme Court’s concerns regarding student well-being and reducing exam-related stress.
