Description
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced an increase in the limit for collateral-free loans available to farmers, effective from January 1. This move aims to provide financial support to small and marginal farmers who are grappling with rising farming costs.
Revised Loan Limit
The RBI has raised the collateral-free loan limit from rupees 1.6 lakh to rupees 2 lakh. This change is intended to offer financial assistance to farmers, particularly those without substantial land holdings. The RBI’s initiative is expected to benefit more than 86% of farmers across India.
Banks To Implement New Loan Guidelines
Under the new guidelines, banks are required to offer loans of up to rupees 2 lakh to farmers without collateral or margin money. This policy aims to improve access to credit for small-scale landowners, allowing them to secure the necessary funds for agricultural activities. According to the Agriculture Ministry, this will ease financial access for farmers, especially as many face rising input costs.
Facilitating Kisan Credit Card (KCC) Loans
The revised loan limit also simplifies access to Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loans, which are crucial for farmers to fund their agricultural needs. The enhanced loan cap will make it easier for farmers to obtain these loans, ensuring smoother financial support for various farming operations.
Support From Interest Subvention Scheme
This initiative is further backed by the Modified Interest Subvention Scheme, which offers loans up to rupees 3 lakh at a reduced interest rate of 4%. The collaboration between the RBI’s new loan limit and the interest subvention scheme is designed to ease farmers' financial burden, particularly during difficult economic times.
Despite the broader economic slowdown, India’s agriculture sector has shown resilience, with the farm GDP growing by 3.5% from July to September, outperforming the broader economy's growth rate. This positive trend highlights the importance of strengthening financial support for farmers to help maintain this momentum and ensure sustainable agricultural growth.
