Researchers from the University of Concepcion in Chile and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in the United States have recently discovered a new species of predatory amphipod, Dulcibella camanchaca, in the Atacama Trench.
About Dulcibella Camanchaca
Species Overview - Dulcibella camanchaca is a newly identified amphipod species belonging to the Eusiridae family. It represents a new genus, contributing significantly to the growing catalog of deep-sea biodiversity.
Discovery Location - The species was discovered at an extraordinary depth of 7,902 meters in the Atacama Trench, a region known for its extreme oceanic conditions.
Physical Characteristics - Measuring just under 4 centimeters, it is larger than most of its relatives. The species possesses specialized raptorial appendages, known as gnathopods, which it uses to hunt smaller organisms, distinguishing it from the scavenging amphipods typically found at such depths. This predatory behavior plays an important role in the deep-sea food chain.
Adaptations - Like many deep-sea organisms, Dulcibella camanchaca has a pale coloration, which is an adaptation to the dark environment of the trench. This trait allows it to survive in the absence of light, a common feature among creatures of the hadal zone.
