Description

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has recently approved the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) as an Athlete Passport Management Unit (APMU). This approval enables the NDTL to manage the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) program, which plays a crucial role in ensuring fair play and athlete protection in the world of sports.

About Athlete Biological Passport (ABP)

The Athlete Biological Passport is a sophisticated anti-doping tool that tracks an athlete's biological markers over a period of time. By monitoring variations in parameters like blood profiles and steroid levels, the ABP is designed to detect and prevent doping in sports, thereby protecting clean athletes.

The ABP functions by employing enhanced testing to identify abnormalities in an athlete’s biological data. It is a powerful method in the fight against doping, offering a robust deterrent and enabling investigations. The passport can also serve as indirect evidence of the use of prohibited substances or methods.

In cases of abnormal biological profiles, the ABP can trigger targeted testing, including conventional anti-doping tests. It also acts as supporting evidence in cases of anti-doping rule violations.

Modules Of Athlete Biological Passport (ABP)

Currently, the ABP program includes three key modules:

  • Haematological Module - This module focuses on markers that indicate blood doping, a technique used to enhance oxygen delivery in the body. It helps detect the use of substances or methods that improve oxygen transport.

  • Steroidal Module - It targets markers of steroid doping found in urine or serum. The primary goal is to identify the presence of Endogenous Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (EAAS) when they are artificially administered.

  • Endocrine Module - This module monitors markers related to the abuse of human growth hormone (hGH) and hGH analogs, substances often used for enhancing performance.

By integrating these modules, the ABP aims to provide a more effective, long-term solution to combat doping in sports, ensuring a level playing field for athletes globally.
