Description

The Supreme Court recently agreed to review a petition challenging the Kerala High Court's decision to support the Guruvayur temple administration's move to discontinue the traditional "udayasthamana pooja" on Ekadasi. The temple had cited crowd management concerns as the reason for halting the centuries-old ritual.

About Guruvayur Temple

The Guruvayoor Sree Krishna Swamy Temple, often referred to as the "Dwarka of the South," is a renowned Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna. Situated in the town of Guruvayur in Thrissur District, Kerala, the temple is a significant religious site for Hindus.

Historical Background

Although the earliest recorded history of the temple dates back to the 17th century, some texts and legends suggest its existence could span over 5000 years. In 1716, the temple was looted and destroyed by the Dutch but was later rebuilt in 1747. Today, it ranks as the fourth-largest temple in India in terms of daily footfall.

Features Of Temple

  • Chief Deity: The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna, also known as Guruvayoorappan.

  • Architecture: Built in the traditional Kerala style, the temple's central shrine is believed to have been reconstructed in 1638 CE.

  • Significant Structures: Key features of the temple include the Nalambalam (a covered structure surrounding the sanctum), the Balikkal (a sacrificial stone), and the Deepastambam (a pillar of lights). Ancient 17th-century murals adorn the walls of the sanctum sanctorum.

  • Dwajasthamba: The temple’s flagstaff, a towering 70-foot structure, is fully covered in gold and is a prominent landmark.

Notable Rituals

  • Thulabharam: One of the most famous rituals at the temple, Thulabharam involves weighing devotees against offerings such as jaggery, coconuts, sugar, or bananas on a large scale. The offerings are then presented to the deity.

  • Elephant Sanctuary: The temple is also home to a large population of captive male Asian elephants. The nearby Punnathur Kotta Elephant Sanctuary houses 56 elephants, making it one of the temple's unique features.

The Guruvayur Temple continues to be a major pilgrimage site and holds great cultural and religious significance for Hindus, attracting millions of devotees annually.
