The Abathsahayeshwarar Temple in Thukkatchi, a 1,300-year-old structure from the Chola dynasty located in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district, has earned UNESCO’s 2023 Award of Distinction for its exceptional conservation efforts.

Historical Importance

Built by Kings Vikrama Chola and Kulothunga Chola, the temple originally had five prakarams (enclosures). The village was known by the names Vikrama Chozheeswaram and Kulothunga Chola Nallur. King Kulothunga Chola also commissioned the installation of the Aadhi Sarabeshwarar idol. In addition to this primary deity, the temple houses several others, including Soundaryanayaki Ambal and Ashtabhuja Durga Parameshwari.

Restoration Work

Prior to restoration, the temple was in a deteriorated state. The restoration project involved repairing two of the prakarams and removing overgrown vegetation. Structural reinforcements were made, and the gopurams (tower gateways) were repainted. The consecration ceremony following the restoration took place in September 2023.

UNESCO’s Acknowledgment

UNESCO lauded the project for its balanced approach, combining modern conservation techniques with traditional practices. Local craftsmen, known as sthapathis, played a vital role in ensuring the temple’s original design and aesthetics were maintained. The restoration of this temple has set a benchmark for the conservation of other historic temples in Tamil Nadu.

Government Support

The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department highlighted the recognition, with Minister P.K. Sekarbabu acknowledging the government's efforts. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin also emphasized that the state government has allocated ?100 crore annually for the restoration of temples. Additionally, more temples across Tamil Nadu have been identified for similar conservation work to preserve their rich heritage.
