Description

Bengaluru, The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), renowned for pioneering the integrated five-year BA LLB degree, has now introduced a three-year Bachelor of Arts (BA) program with the option of an additional fourth year. The first batch of students for this new program will be admitted in July 2025.

Vice Chancellor Sudhir Krishnaswamy explained at the program launch that the university aims to offer a curriculum that responds to the needs of 2025, providing a distinctive educational experience. The new BA program will be designed with a strong professional orientation, blending social sciences and humanities with practical skills. According to Krishnaswamy, the BA degree will serve as a "terminal degree," meaning students will not require additional qualifications after completing this course.

The BA program is a natural extension of NLSIU's extensive experience in legal education, particularly its 35-year legacy of offering the integrated 5-year BA LLB degree. The course curriculum has been carefully crafted by the university's faculty teams, drawing from their expertise and reflecting ongoing trends in various fields. Extensive consultations with academics and industry practitioners helped shape the course structure and content.

Admission Details

The BA program is open to students who have completed their higher secondary education (Class 12 or equivalent). General category candidates must have a minimum aggregate of 55%, while candidates from the SC/ST category must have at least 45% marks. Students in their final year of higher secondary education are also eligible to apply, provided they meet the academic criteria upon completion.

An essential part of the curriculum includes learning Indian languages, alongside hands-on courses in emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, filmmaking, business consulting, user experience research, digital journalism, creative writing, entrepreneurship, and policy advocacy. Students will also engage in internships, with at least one month of practical experience required each year.

Fourth Year Option

Students will have the option to extend their studies for a fourth year, based on their performance in the first three years. Those opting for the fourth year will undertake a 20,000-word dissertation based on original research. Students completing the four-year program will graduate with a BA degree.

Program Intake & Admission Process

The NLS BA program will admit a maximum of 60 students for the 2025-26 academic year. Admission will be based on an all-India written entrance exam, the NLSAT-BA. The university has already released a registration of interest form and will begin accepting applications in the first week of January 2025. The application deadline is March 23, 2025. The NLSAT-BA exam will be held on April 27, 2025, with the final admission list to be announced by the end of May. Classes for the new cohort will commence on July 1, 2025.

This new initiative reflects NLSIU’s ongoing commitment to innovation in legal and interdisciplinary education, providing students with a comprehensive, professionally oriented education tailored to the demands of the future.
