India has been selected to chair the 68th session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND).
About UN Commission On Narcotic Drugs (CND)
The CND is the primary policy-making body within the United Nations that addresses drug-related issues.
It plays a key role in monitoring global drug trends, helping member states craft balanced drug policies, and ensuring the implementation of major international drug control conventions.
The commission is responsible for determining the level of control for various substances under three significant international drug control treaties: the 1961, 1971, and 1988 Conventions.
Established in 1946 by a resolution from the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the CND is one of the ECOSOC's functional commissions and serves as a governing body for the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
The commission consists of 53 member states, chosen by ECOSOC, and is chaired by a Bureau, with one member representing each regional group.
The CND also oversees five subsidiary bodies focused on drug law enforcement in Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific, Africa, and the Near and Middle East.
It holds annual meetings to adopt decisions and resolutions, and additional sessions are convened to discuss budgetary and administrative issues related to the UN drug programme.
The CND is headquartered in Vienna, Austria.
