Description
Tata Power has begun construction of the Rs 6,900 crore Khorlochhu Hydropower Project in Bhutan, with plans for commissioning by 2029.
About the Khorlochhu Hydropower Project
Location - The project is located on the Kholongchhu River in the Trashiyangtse district of Eastern Bhutan, designed to help meet Bhutan’s growing electricity demand and support India’s renewable energy goals.
Joint Venture - It marks the first energy project developed through a joint venture between India and Bhutan.
Development Partnership - The project is being built by Khorlochhu Hydro Power Limited (KHPL), a collaboration between Bhutan's Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) and India’s Tata Power.
Capacity - The 600 MW hydropower project is expected to be completed and operational by September 2029.
Infrastructure - The project will include a 95-meter-high concrete gravity dam, which will be 165 meters long and 6 meters wide. This will create a reservoir that stretches 1.4 km and has a gross storage capacity of 2.9 million cubic meters.
Power Transmission - The electricity generated by the project will be transmitted to the NEWNE (North Eastern-Western-Northern-Eastern) grids of Bhutan and India through 400 kV transmission lines.
Financing - The total cost of the project is estimated at £488.14 million (INR 46.32 billion), with financing provided under a debt-equity ratio of 70:30. The Government of India is supporting the equity share of DGPC.
