Kerala is preparing to launch a new insurance scheme for cattle, which has recently been approved by the central government. This initiative is designed to provide greater support for the state's dairy sector.

Recent Initiatives To Support Dairy Farming

The state has already rolled out several programs to strengthen the dairy industry. A new veterinary ambulance service is now operational in every block panchayat, ensuring that livestock receive timely medical care. Additionally, the government has allocated Rupees 22 crore for the care and welfare of calves.

Addressing Climate Change Challenges

Climate change has posed significant challenges to Kerala's livestock, with extreme heatwaves causing the death of 550 cows this year. To help mitigate these losses, the government compensates Rupees 37,500 for each cow that dies. Additionally, rising fodder prices have been impacting both Milma (the Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation) and Kerala Feeds Ltd., with farmers facing increasing financial pressures.

New Initiatives To Improve Dairy Farming

To counter these challenges, Kerala has introduced two new initiatives aimed at improving the dairy farming sector:

• ‘Arunodayam’- This initiative focuses on improving the quality of heifers to enhance milk production.

• ‘Snehamitram’- This life insurance scheme for dairy farmers comes with a nominal premium of Rupees 10, facilitated by Milma’s Malabar Union.

These measures reflect the state's ongoing commitment to supporting dairy farmers and ensuring the sustainability of the industry in the face of environmental and financial challenges.
