The Global Matchmaking Platform (GMP) was officially launched during Energy Day at COP29, as a joint initiative between the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Climate Club. Its primary focus is to tackle emissions from high-polluting industries, with the goal of bridging the $125 billion annual funding gap required to achieve net-zero emissions.
Goals Of GMP
The GMP aims to offer tailored support to countries based on their specific needs and challenges. It plays a key role in the Climate Club’s efforts to reduce industrial emissions and will facilitate pilot projects in countries such as Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Egypt, Indonesia, Kenya, Morocco, and Cambodia. The platform is designed to enhance collaboration between nations and industries to drive global climate action.
Investment Requirements
Currently, global investments in industries with high emissions stand at around $15 billion annually, but this figure needs to increase substantially. By 2030, the investment required must rise to $70 billion and reach $125 billion by 2050. High-emission industries like steel, cement, chemicals, and aluminum contribute to approximately 70% of global industrial CO2 emissions.
Challenges In Emerging Economies
Emerging and developing economies (EMDEs) face particular difficulties in transitioning to cleaner industrial practices. These countries often lack the necessary technology and financial resources for decarbonization. A recent report highlighted that from 2018 to 2022, only 1.4% of global climate finance was allocated to industrial sectors, underscoring the need for more targeted financial support.
Role Of International Cooperation
Countries such as Germany, Turkey, and Bangladesh are working together to foster greater international cooperation to reduce emissions. Important partners include the World Bank and Climate Investment Funds (CIF). At COP29, Mukhtar Babayev, the COP29 President, emphasized the crucial role the GMP plays in meeting global climate targets.
Looking Ahead: The Future Of GMP
The GMP is an essential part of the Climate Club’s 2024 work program, which focuses on advancing climate policies and transforming industrial sectors. By 2025-26, the GMP aims to integrate industrial decarbonization into national climate action plans, with further discussions planned for COP30. Experts also stress the need for additional support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), particularly in developing countries. These industries, while crucial to local economies, also contribute to emissions and need both financial and technical assistance to transition towards sustainable practices.
