Description

Biofloc Technology (BFT) and Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) have become more popular in India's aquaculture industry.

Regarding Biofloc Technology And Recirculating Aquaculture Systems

  • Biofloc Technology is a closed tank-based fish farming technology that uses helpful bacteria to clean the water in fish tanks.

  • Heterotrophic bacteria (often Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter, Acinetobacter, and Alcaligenes) are employed to convert organic waste (such as uneaten feed and fish waste) into microbial biomass, which is subsequently devoured by fish or shrimp.

Advantages

  • This procedure maintains the water clean without the need for frequent changes, while also reducing the danger of sickness in the fish. Because the water remains cleaner, farmers are no longer required to employ chemicals or antibiotics from other sources.

  • BFT also saves money on feed since fish may acquire extra nutrients from recycled waste, making it a sustainable, cost-effective, and ecologically responsible option for fish farming.

  • The built-in aeration system maintains appropriate dissolved oxygen levels to stimulate microbial activity, while mechanical filtering decreases the risk of infection.

  • It is better suited to small farmers with limited land since it can be established in a short space and even used for backyard farming. However, it comes with drawbacks, including exorbitant expenses.

About Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS)

  • It is also a closed-loop tank farming system in which water is recycled after filtering.

  • RAS filters and cleans the water in the tank, eliminating waste and making it healthy for the fish to live in.

  • It automates the setup of culture tanks, including mechanical and biological filtration systems, and successfully prevents infections from entering from outside sources.

  • It requires little efforts to analyze culture, water, and disease monitoring, resulting in increased biosecurity. As a result, fish are less likely to get ill, reducing the need for disinfectants or antibiotics.

  • The RAS technique also provides a regulated environment for temperature, oxygen levels, and cleanliness, guaranteeing the best situations for healthy fish growth.

  • It may be installed indoors or in places with no natural water supplies, allowing fish to be farmed closer to cities and in high demand.
