President Droupadi Murmu has appointed K Sanjay Murthy as the new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India. Murthy, an IAS officer from the 1989 batch, currently serves as the Secretary of the Department of Higher Education and belongs to the Andhra Pradesh cadre.

K Sanjay Murthy will assume the office of the CAG starting from the date of his appointment. He succeeds Girish Chandra Murmu, who held the position since August 8, 2020. Prior to his current role, Murthy served as the first Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.
Role And Responsibilities Of The CAG
The CAG of India is responsible for auditing the financial operations of all Union and State government departments. This includes key sectors like railways, defense, India Post, and telecommunications. The CAG also oversees the financial activities of over 1,500 public enterprises and more than 400 non-commercial bodies.
Powers Of The CAG
The CAG holds significant powers to ensure transparency and accountability in government finances. According to Article 149 of the Indian Constitution, the CAG has the authority to inspect any audited office or organization and examine financial transactions. It can also demand access to relevant records and documents for the purpose of its audit.
Legislative Framework
The CAG’s functions are governed by the "CAG’s Duties, Powers, and Conditions Act," which was enacted in 1971. This legislation defines the responsibilities and powers of the CAG in areas such as government spending, revenue collection, and management of grants and aid.
Support Structure
The Indian Audit and Accounts Department (IA&AD) provides support to the CAG in carrying out its duties. The department consists of approximately 600 senior and mid-level officers, supported by a team of around 47,000 subordinate staff members.
