Description
Staff from the Tamil Nadu Forest Department and members of a non-governmental organisation recently rescued a unique peacock with white feathers due to a genetic disease known as leucism.
About Leucism
It is an aberrant disorder of diminished pigmentation that affects a variety of animals (including birds, mammals, and reptiles) and is distinguished by an overall pale appearance or regions of reduced coloring.
It is caused by a genetic defect that prevents melanin and other pigments from developing in feathers, hair, or skin.
Leucism affects only the feathers of birds, resulting in non-traditional plumage colors.
They may have white areas where the bird should not have them, or its entire plumage may appear pale or bleached.
Albinism Versus Leucism
Albinism is a rare genetic abnormality in which melanin production is completely absent (or very low).
Melanin is a pigment found naturally in the skin, hair, eyes, and brain tissue.
The type and amount of melanin in animals determines the color of their skin, hair, and eyes.
Albinos have white or pinkish skin and red eyes due to the lack of melanin synthesis, which allows the underlying blood vessels to peek through from behind the eyes.
Leucism involves just a partial decrease of melanin production and/or distribution.
The animal may have white or spotty skin, fur, and/or feathers. However, the pigment cells in birds' eyes, legs, and bills are unaffected.
