Five exceptional students have been selected as Rhodes Scholars-Elect for India 2025 after a rigorous selection process, which included competitive applications and two rounds of preliminary interviews. These five scholars are Rayan Chakrabarti, Vibha Swaminathan, Avanish Vats, Shubham Narwal, and Pal Aggarwal.
Know About Rhodes Scholarship
The Rhodes Scholarship, founded in 1903, is the world’s oldest and most prestigious graduate fellowship. Scholars receive full funding for postgraduate study at the University of Oxford. The Rhodes Scholarships for India, established in 1947, select five students annually. Applicants from around the world are eligible, with the selection process focusing on academic excellence, leadership potential, and a commitment to solving global challenges.
Meet The Rhodes Scholars-Elect
Rayan Chakrabarti
Rayan is currently pursuing his Master’s degree at the School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). He completed his undergraduate studies in literature at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. His academic focus lies at the intersection of memory studies, heritage, and anthropology. At Oxford, Rayan plans to work on creating an archive and museum dedicated to the Covid-19 pandemic’s impact on South Asia. In addition, he is a trained pianist and enjoys writing and translating poetry related to politics and nationhood.
Vibha Swaminathan
Vibha is in her final year of studying law at the National Law School, Bangalore, where she is pursuing an LLB (Hons). She also holds a BA (Hons) in Political Science from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University. Her academic interests revolve around the political and legal aspects of citizenship regimes. Vibha aspires to combine her academic work with human rights litigation, especially focusing on trial courts in India.
Avanish Vats
Hailing from Ranchi, Avanish completed his bachelor’s degree in Philosophy at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University. His research has focused on improving accessibility in education and healthcare for individuals with disabilities in Jharkhand, in collaboration with the State Disability Commissioner’s office. He is also the third Rhodes Scholar-Elect from India with a visual impairment. Avanish is a Tabla player and has a passion for directing short films. His academic focus includes epistemology and making philosophy more accessible to people with disabilities.
Shubham Narwal
Shubham is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry at the ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute in Bareilly. His childhood exposure to the National Dairy Research Institute ignited his passion for Veterinary Science. At Oxford, Shubham intends to pursue an MSc in Clinical Embryology and focus on conservation strategies for the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard. He is the first Indian Rhodes Scholar-Elect in the field of veterinary medicine. Outside academics, Shubham is passionate about volunteering for nature conservation and is an avid basketball fan.
Pal Aggarwal
Pal is a final-year BTech student in Engineering Physics at IIT Bombay, with a deep interest in astrophysics, mathematics, and data science. She has worked with researchers at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics. At Oxford, Pal plans to study high-energy astrophysics, with the ambition of becoming an astronaut and advocating for women in science. Additionally, she is a trained dancer in both Bharatnatyam and contemporary dance.
