The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has issued the World Intellectual Property Indicators (WIPI) 2024, which highlight global trends in intellectual property (IP) filings.
Regarding World Intellectual Property Indicators
The research demonstrates a large increase in patent, trademark, and industrial design applications in major economies.
Highlights From The report
India has won a place in the global top ten for all three primary Intellectual Property (IP) rights: patents, trademarks, and industrial designs.
In 2023, India experienced the largest growth in patent applications (+15.7%) among the top 20 origins, marking the fifth consecutive year of double-digit growth.
India ranks sixth in the world for patent applications with 64,480, with resident files accounting for more than half of all submissions (55.2%)—a first for the country.
According to the research, India's industrial design applications are steadily increasing (36.4%), which is consistent with India's growing emphasis on product design, manufacturing, and creative sectors.
The top three sectors—textiles and accessories, tools and machines, and health and cosmetics—accounted for nearly half of all design filings.
From 2018 to 2023, patent and industrial design applications more than doubled.
India's patent-to-GDP ratio has also increased significantly, growing from 144 to 381 over the last decade, demonstrating that intellectual property activity is expanding in tandem with economic growth.
India ranks fourth in the world in terms of trademark filings, with a 6.1% growth expected in 2023. Nearly 90% of these filings were made by residents, with Health (21.9%), Agriculture (15.3%), and Clothing (12.8%) taking the lead.
India's trademark office has the second-largest number of active registrations in the world, with over 3.2 million trademarks in effect, demonstrating the country's strong global brand protection position.
Key findings show a record 3.55 million patent applications filed globally in 2023, up 2.7% from 2022, with significant contributions from Asia's major nations. Residents in China, the United States, Japan, South Korea, and India contributed significantly to this increase.
