China has revealed geographic coordinates that define baselines around the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea.
About Scarborough Shoal
The Scarborough Shoal (also known as the Scarborough Reef) is a triangle-shaped oceanic coral atoll formed on top of a seamount in the eastern South China Sea.
It is located approximately 220 kilometers west of the Philippine island of Luzon.
It is the South China Sea's largest atoll, buried at high tide and with only a few rocks above sea level.
This atoll extends 18 kilometers northwest-southeast and 10 kilometers northeast-southwest.
The shoal's deep waters make it a fertile fishing region with abundant marine life, and the lagoon is home to many commercially valuable shellfish and sea cucumbers.
The shoal is the source of a continuing and unresolved dispute between the People's Republic of China and the Philippines, with each claiming that it is part of their territory and that they have exclusive access to its waters.
Scarborough Shoal has no structures, but it is effectively controlled by China, which has maintained a continual coast guard presence there since 2012.
China, which today refers to the shoal as Huangyan Island, claims historical control of the area dating back to the Yuan Dynasty in the 1200s.
The Philippines claims the territory based on geography, as it is much closer to the Philippines' main island of Luzon, which has the capital, Manila, but more than 500 miles from China.
According to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), it is part of the Philippines' exclusive economic zone of 200 nautical miles.
