Description
India is in advanced talks with Oman, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, the Maldives, and Singapore to build cross-border energy transmission lines as part of the ambitious 'One Sun, One World, One Grid' (OSOWOG) project.
About The One Sun, One World, One Grid (OSOWOG) Initiative
The Prime Minister of India proposed the OSOWOG project during the First Assembly of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) in October 2018.
It is an initiative to establish a transnational electricity grid that will provide power worldwide.
The project is being led by the governments of India and the United Kingdom in collaboration with the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and the World Bank.
Vision: It intends to connect many regional networks via a common grid that will be utilized to transfer renewable energy power, thereby realizing the potential of renewable energy sources, particularly solar energy.
The goal is to harness solar and other renewable energy sources from all over the world, where the sun is shining at any given time, and efficiently send that power to locations where it is required.
OSOWOG seeks to deliver power to about 140 countries via a shared grid that ensures the transmission of clean and efficient solar power.
The OSOWOG program will be carried out in three phases.
In the first phase, the Indian grid would be linked to the grids of the Middle East, South Asia, and South-East Asia to form a single grid. This system would subsequently be utilized to distribute solar energy as needed, along with other renewable energy sources.
The second phase would connect the operable first phase to Africa's renewable resource reservoir.
The third phase would focus on attaining full global interconnectedness, with a goal of 2,600 GW of interconnection by 2050. The idea is to integrate as many countries as possible into a unified renewable energy power system. This can then be accessible by any country.
It will bring together a global coalition of national governments, international financial and technical organizations, legislators, power system operators, and thought leaders to speed up the development of the new infrastructure required for a clean energy-powered world.
