Description

In response to recent cases of cheetahs from Madhya Pradesh crossing into neighboring Rajasthan, the two states have formed a joint corridor management committee. The committee's major goal will be to conserve these felines, create adequate habitats, and facilitate the future migration of cheetahs from Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park (KNP) and Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary.

Objective

Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have formed a ten-member joint committee to establish and administer a cheetah corridor between the two states, assuring the safety of cheetahs.

Composition

The committee is made up of forest authorities from both states, led by the Principal Chief Conservators of Forest (PCCFs) (wildlife) of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Reason for Formation- The committee was formed in reaction to events in which cheetahs from Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park (KNP) crossed into Rajasthan, such as in May 2024 and December 2023.

Key Task- The group is entrusted with establishing the 'Cheetah Conservancy Landscape' in the corridor to allow cheetahs to transit safely between states.

Key Responsibilities And Tasks

Cheetah Conservancy's Landscape Identification

  • The committee will identify and designate sites where cheetahs can safely migrate between Kuno National Park (KNP) in Madhya Pradesh and forests in Rajasthan.

  • This includes creating clean pathways to minimize disruption to wildlife.

Long-Term Strategy

  • Creating a long-term strategy for the cheetah corridor that prioritizes the safety of cheetahs.

  • The committee will also draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan for a feasibility assessment on corridor development.

Tourism And Conservation Collaboration

  • The committee will look into shared tourism routes that connect the two states, including the National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary.

  • It would also investigate joining Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh and Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan to promote integrated wildlife tourism.

Capacity Building

  • The committee will make recommendations to improve the capacity of forest officials and frontline staff in monitoring, patrolling, and managing cheetahs that stray from Kuno.

  • This will include training on how to regulate and prevent cheetah migration outside of specified corridors.

Habitat Improvement Measures

  • Recommendations will be made for habitat improvement in both states, with a focus on grassland growth and prey base enhancement.

  • These enhancements will help cheetahs migrate from Kuno to their intended second habitat in Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary.

Background Of The Cheetah Translocation Project

Translocation of Cheetahs

  • Eight cheetahs were translocated from Namibia to Kuno National Park in September 2022, making it the first intercontinental carnivore translocation in India as part of the Cheetah Introduction Project.

  • In December 2022, 12 more cheetahs were relocated from South Africa.

Current Situation at Kuno National Park

  • Despite several fatalities and successful births, the Kuno cheetah population has grown to 24 animals, including 12 cubs, since the translocation.
