Description

A new United Nations report warns of escalating acute food insecurity in 22 nations and territories. This prediction spans the period from November 2024 until May 2025. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) released the study on October 31, 2024. Nigeria, Sudan, Yemen, Ethiopia, and Haiti are among the countries most heavily affected.

Countries Affected

The research identified 14 nations and two geographical clusters experiencing critical food insecurity. Nigeria, Sudan, Yemen, Ethiopia, Myanmar, Syrian Arab Republic, South Sudan, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Haiti, Somalia, Chad, Niger, Mozambique, Burkina Faso, Palestine (Gaza Strip), Kenya, Mali, Lebanon, Namibia, and Lesotho.

Current conflict and armed violence are the biggest causes of famine. These causes destabilize food systems, displace communities, and impede humanitarian efforts. Sudan, Palestine, and South Sudan are among the most vulnerable areas to famine.

Current Hotspots

The report highlights poor conditions at the Zamzam camp in North Darfur and the Gaza Strip. Haiti, Mali, and South Sudan are also experiencing severe food insecurity. Kenya, Lesotho, and Namibia are the latest additions to the list of hunger hot areas.

Non-state armed groups are causing an increase in violence in the Central Sahel. Violence and access constraints have resulted in significant food insecurity in northern Mali and Burkina Faso. Chad is dealing with war and an influx of Sudanese refugees. Northern Nigeria's security situation is also deteriorating.

Regional Impacts

In Southern Africa, the violence in northern Mozambique is projected to exacerbate food shortages. Myanmar's economy is also in chaos as a result of the ongoing war. In Latin America, escalating violence in Haiti is driving displaced populations to starvation.

Scope Of The Crisis

A startling 169.2 million people are expected to experience acute food insecurity in these locations. This includes 31.8 million in Nigeria, 21.1 million in Sudan, 19 million in Yemen, 15.8 million in Ethiopia, 13.3 million in Myanmar, 12.9 million in Syria, and 7.1 million in South Sudan.

Climate Factors

Weather extremes and climate unpredictability exacerbate food insecurity. La Nina is anticipated to persist, affecting rainfall and temperatures. While some regions' agricultural circumstances may improve, others, particularly Nigeria, Malawi, and Mozambique, are likely to see severe floods. Dry weather may damage Ethiopia and Somalia.

Urgent Measures Required

The report emphasizes the necessity for rapid action to avoid a growing catastrophe. FAO and WFP advise world leaders to prioritize conflict resolution, economic development, and climate adaption methods.

Cindy McCain, Executive Director of the World Food Programme, underlined the importance of collaboration among world leaders. Solutions must resolve conflicts, allow for safe humanitarian operations, and organize resources to successfully battle global hunger.
