The Pradhan Mantri Vanbandhu Kalyan Yojana (PMVKY), which was started on October 28, 2014, is an effort aimed at the empowerment and integration of India's tribal tribes, which account for 8.9% of the population. This plan, with a budget allocation of Rs 26,135.46 crore from 2021-2026, aims to address their particular socio-economic concerns and promote sustainable development. The program is consistent with the government's aim of "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas" and focuses on empowering tribes across the country by providing necessary services, financial support, and cultural heritage preservation.
PMVKY Consists Of Six Core Components
The Pradhan Mantri Adi Adarsh Gram Yojana aims to build 36,428 villages with significant tribal populations, stressing infrastructure, education, and healthcare, with a budget of Rupees 7,276 crore by 2025-26. Each village receives Rupees 20.38 lakh for vital amenities, with 16,000 villages currently underway.
Development of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs)- Emphasizes the upliftment of PVTGs through targeted housing, healthcare, and education efforts. The Pradhan Mantri PVTGs Development Mission, allocated Rs 15,000 crore over three years, aims to improve living conditions for about 15,000 PVTG habitations.
Support for Tribal Research Institutes (TRI)- This effort funds tribal welfare research, which helps states understand and solve specific cultural and socioeconomic concerns.
Pre-Matric Scholarships- Provides financial assistance to tribal students in grades IX and X, assuring continuing education, particularly for students from economically disadvantaged households. The funding scheme comprises both federal and state contributions, with special provisions for Northeastern states and Union Territories.
Post-Matric Scholarships- Provides financial assistance to Scheduled Tribe students studying beyond class X, with the goal of encouraging tribal individuals to pursue higher education.
Administrative Assistance for Project Management Units- Creates state-level project units to effectively oversee and implement tribal welfare programs.
Additional Initiatives
The Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) initiative aims to create 728 schools for indigenous students in grades VI through XII by 2026.
The Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Vikas Mission (PMJVM) combines existing programs to promote tribal business, particularly through support for Minor Forest Produce (MFP).
Development Action Plan for Scheduled Tribes (DAPST) A multi-departmental program is committing ?1.23 lakh crore this fiscal year to address tribal needs in education, health, and jobs.
Outlook
PMVKY's integrated approach, which includes scholarships, livelihood creation, and infrastructure, is a substantial effort to improve the socioeconomic situations of India's tribal populations. The government's constant funding and participation demonstrate a long-standing commitment to building an inclusive society in which tribal groups can thrive.
