The government of India has established Gram Panchayat-Level Weather Forecasting at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.

About The Gram Panchayat-Level Weather Forecasting Initiative

• The initiative is being developed in partnership by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj (MoPR) and the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).

• It serves the purpose of "empowering rural communities and enhancing disaster preparedness at the grassroots, and will benefit farmers and villagers across the country" .

• The effort will offer Gram Panchayats with a five-day weather forecast and hourly updates, allowing rural communities to better manage agricultural activities and mitigate weather-related risks.

• It will provide weather reports through e-GramSwaraj, the Meri Panchayat app, and the Gram Manchitra web.  e-GramSwaraj is currently operational.

• Users can view data on current temperature, wind speed, cloud cover (in percentage), rainfall, and relative humidity at the gram panchayat level, as well as five-day projections of lowest and maximum temperatures, rainfall, cloud cover, wind direction, and wind speed, and an overall weather forecast.

• significance: It will "strengthen grassroots governance and promote sustainable agricultural practices, making rural populations more climate-resilient and better equipped to tackle environmental challenges".
