Description
Around 150 to 200 endangered Indian Skimmer birds were recently spotted at Lower Manair Dam, marking a Telangana first.
About The Indian Skimmer
It is one of three species of the skimmer genus Rynchops of the family Laridae.
It is native to South Asia.
It derives its name from the manner it feeds, which involves flying low over the water's surface and'skimming' for fish.
Scientific name: Rynchops albicollis.
Distribution
It is primarily prevalent in India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, with some populations spreading into Nepal and Myanmar.
The Chambal River, which runs through northern India, is one of the best places to see Indian Skimmers.
The population is predicted to be between 2,450 and 2,900 adult people.
It lives predominantly in bigger, sandy lowland rivers, near lakes and adjacent marshes, and, during the non-breeding season, in estuaries and coastlines.
Features
It reaches a length of 40-43 cm.
The Indian Skimmer has a distinctive appearance. The main body is black, and the underbelly is white.
The most striking characteristic is its orange beak, which has a lower mandible that is significantly longer than the upper one.
This unique beak allows the bird to glide above the water's surface, catching small fish and aquatic invertebrates.
The bird's wings are long and angular, allowing for swift and precise flying.
Conservation status: Endangered (IUCN).
